After a lot of research, there appears that no one really knows where that rule came from. According to this Time Magazine article I found, the "no white after Labor Day" rule may have come from the early 1900s. The upper class citizens would head out to the beaches in their lightly colored clothing to beat the heat or to show that they are in leisurely clothing. Since Labor Day signals the end of summer, these upper class people would return to the cities and to their dark, heavy fall clothes they wear to work and school.
Jeffrey Tolar started it in 1987 when he used to wear the "Green Gremlin" mascot uniform after labor day for the Bennetsville High football games. The little guy running around in that green gremlin outfit so inspired everyone, that it became a tradition for all to stop wearing white after the Labor Day holiday. Thank you Jeffrey. Fanny packs will be the next fashion trend he will ignite!
After my own share of hours of research, I found that because people pale in the winter, white makes them look ghostly. Therefore, as not to scare the kids during those cold winter months, wearing white was banned. This happened back in the good ol' days.
Our research shows that the main reason for not wearing white after Labor Day is because white reflects heat making it cooler. Therefore, it is worn mainly in the warmer months. It is considered acceptable to wear white after Labor Day in tropical climates because it is warm year-round. Everyone had great answers yesterday, especially Mathew. Thanks.
